Google SWOT Analysis

My first Blog post for ETR500 is to give a SWOT analysis for Google.  Here are some general thoughts on their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats and how these can be built upon to take advantage of their Strengths and Opportunities while minimizing their Weaknesses and Threats.  Some of the things mentioned in the table below may be considered obvious or generic but for the purposes of this review important not to ignore.  Please share your thoughts!

  1. Chelsey,

I think it is so nice that you used the model Sharie introduced in class which combined each two factors together and did further strategic analysis!

For the threat, I think though there are many search engine companies, Google is still the most popular one in the world. However, as Google expands its business and starts getting into other field, it loses most of its advantages, such as brand positioning and customer loyalty. Google should also put great effort on how to combine its various products and services together to increase its customer loyalty, as Apple did with its OS and iCloud.

  2. I really like your strategies recommendation that Google should assign a team to focus on errors and improve its search capabilities. When a lot of people is thinking about how to apply business approach to strength a brand, its precious to take a look into a company itself. Thinking about where the problem is, and how to solve the problem is still the root of every brand. In addition, I agree with unobtrusive advertising to users for the strength part. I never think the Google is offering annoying advertisements to users. To be honest, I never feel they are offering advertisement, unless I pay special attention!

  3. BTW, both you and Yuyang point out that Google is lack of personalization or fashion trend, I'm not sure that I totally agree with that. When you go to http://www.google.com/ig, you can actually design your own page. But it is indeed really hard to recognize. That's absolutely something that Google should revise in the future.
